Just like today, Gerrard’s incredible goal at “Anfield” against Olympiakos!

by

Today, they are completed 19 years from that forgettable memory game of hers Liverpool by Olympic at Anfield for the sixth and final matchday of the Champions League group stage of the 2004/05 season.

A game that was supposed to be written in “golden” letters in the history of the “reds”, but also of the top interclub competition itself, giving us one of the most iconic goals ever achieved in the institution!

The “red and whites” traveled to Merseyside for… three results, as, with a defeat even with a goal difference, they were the ones who would have qualified for the “16” of the competition. The stunning direct Rivaldo’s free kick in the 27th minute put the Piraeus in the driver’s seat, bringing them closer to the “dream” of qualification.

Liverpool’s answer, however, came in the second half, where initially the China Pongol tied the game in the 47th minute, with Neil Mellor in the 80′ to give the home team the lead!

The last quarter turned into a thriller, with the English putting a lot of pressure on Dusan Bajevic’s team and eventually finding the much-coveted qualification goal in the 86th minute, with elusive long shot by their captain, Steven Gerrard!

A historic goal, which led Liverpool to the knockout stage of the competition, where Rafa Benitez’s side eliminated Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus and Chelsea in succession, to reach the end of the journey and take the trophy in the unrepeatable final of Istanbul against Milan!
