The World Table Tennis Feeder of Italy started today 12/12 in the city of Biella. For the blue and white colors, it included three matches and tomorrow, Wednesday 13/12, is the decisive day in the effort of most of our athletes to qualify for the main boards of the individual competitions. In the men’s singles first, Giorgos Konstantinopoulos, Konstantinos Angelakis and Yiannis Sgouropoulos are in the 2nd qualifying round, who prevailed over Giorgos Stamatouros at noon in the Greek “single combat”. If they pass two more rounds, they advance to the board of “64”, where Panagiotis Gionis is directly. In the men’s doubles, Konstantinopoulos/Sgouropoulos scored a positive result and tomorrow they will also compete for qualification to the “16” table. Finally, three more Greek couples are vying for entry to the 1st round in men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles, while on Thursday the main draw of the women’s singles starts with Katerina Toliou, Malamatenia Papadimitriou and Elisavet Terpou (there is no qualifying phase here).
The premiere in the last Feeder of 2023 reserved the special “contrary” of the main athletes of our national team, Stamatouros and Sgouropoulos. In a spectacular match, which also had live coverage on the internet, the Greek champions of recent years gave their best with Sgouropoulos winning. Taking the first two sets by a margin, Stamatouros went down to 2-1 and then led in the 4th set, until the four-time European champion prevailed 3-1 (11-4, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8).
Also in the 1st qualifier, Konstantinopoulos had an easy task against Federico Giardi from San Marino and prevailed with a 3-0 set (11-3, 11-9, 11-4).
Angelakis, after advancing without a fight, faces the Frenchman Jules Cavai tomorrow in the 2nd round (at 11:00 Greece at table 2). Sgouropoulos faces the Italian Antonino Amato, who also has a ticket for Olympiakos (12:45, table 3) and Konstantinopoulos the Slovenian Peter Hribar (11:35, table 2).
The draws of the 1st round were always simple. In the men, Gionis will face Angel Naranjo from Puerto Rico. In the women’s category, Papadimitriou will face the Italian Georgia Picolin, Terpou the Serbian Isabella Loupulescu and Toliu the Serbian Sabina Sourgian.
All matches are streamed online through the WTT youtube channel and there you find the links for each of the four tables.
In the doubles, the first day included a match for the Greek colors. It was in the men’s doubles where in the 1st qualifying round Sgouropoulos/Konstantinopoulos eliminated Lorenzo Ragni/Matias Monguisti from San Marino with 3-0 sets (11-6, 11-6 11-5). Tomorrow they meet the 1st favorite of this table, Nigerians Orok Etim/Aziz Solanke for the qualification of the table (17:45, table 3). Gionis/Angelakis had a bye in the 1st qualifier and are claiming the same goal against Andrea Puppo/Marco Cappuccio from Italy (17:45, table 2).
In the women’s doubles and the only qualifying round, Toliou/Papadimitriou compete against the Japanese Asuka Sasao/Mizuzu Takeya (13:20, table 1).
In the mixed doubles qualifiers, Stamatouros/Papadimitriou appear as the 1st favorites to have a bye and get on the board. Angelakis and Toliou are looking to get on the board against Jan Valenda/Zdena Blaskova from the Czech Republic (16:00, table 1).
