The “red and whites” were drawn to face Ferentsvaros, with the two teams having met again 27 years ago.
It was the 1996/97 season, when o Olympic and the Ferentsvaros crossed swords in the UEFA Cup. With the Piraeus finally staying out of the continuation after the double matches with the Hungarians, who managed to secure their qualification.
The teams’ first match had been played in Hungary on 10 September 1996. The Hungarian club took the lead through Zavadski in the 11th minute, with Ilja Ivić equalizing in the 29th minute. Nevertheless, Varesanovic’s own goal in the 35th minute gave the home team the lead again, who with Arani in the 52nd minute sealed the 3-1 victory and took a big step forward.
The rematch was held at the old “G. Karaiskakis” on September 24, 1996. Ferentsvaros had taken the lead through Miriuta in the 22nd minute, with Olympiakos replying five minutes later with Ilia Ivić. The Hungarians took the lead again at the start of the second half through Lieberger, but Piraeus managed to respond again with a goal from Ilias Sapanis in the 76th minute. However, this was not enough and Dusan Bajevic’s team was eliminated.
