Referee Committee for Edgard’s hand: “It was a mistake by the referees, a penalty should have been given with the intervention of VAR”

The error of referees and VAR in the much discussed phase with the hand of Martin Edgard who was not awarded a penalty in her derby Liverpool with the Arsenalrecognized through her official placement the PGMOL (English football refereeing committee).

Not a handball by Odegaard. This is why:

Handball is the illegal contact/touch of the ball with the hand(s) and/or arm(s). However, it is not automatically a handball offense every time the ball touches a player’s hand/arm.

After calling it a human error of the former referee that the violation was not initially given, he added that the VAR they should have intervened, giving it penalty kickand clarified that an investigation has been launched into the circumstances under which the mistake was made.

PGMOL’s announcement in detail:



“PGMOL acknowledges that a significant human error occurred during the first half of the match between Liverpool and Arsenal. Martin Edgard’s hand was incorrectly judged by the on-field refereeing team, which did not appear to be a clear obvious error at the time. time, therefore VAR did not intervene. In retrospect, this was a clear and obvious mistake and should have been awarded a penalty with VAR intervention, however VAR did not intervene.

PGMOL will conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances under which the error occurred. PGMOL will immediately contact Liverpool at the conclusion of its investigation, where it will acknowledge the error”.
