He fretted, but Virtue prevailed

by

Worried, but Virtus Bologna won and continues to figure in second place in the Euroleague standings with a record of 13-5. The Italian team overcame Bayern’s obstacle with difficulty and a lot of anxiety, reaching 85-83 literally in the final. At 8-10 the record of the Bavarians, who had the lead for most of the match.

Leading the winners were Sengelia with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and Hackett with 15 points and 5 assists, while Belinelli had 16 points, but on 4/15 shooting overall. On the losing side, the top scorer was Edwards with 22 points.

The match:

The players of both teams started impressively and having very good percentages outside the 6.75m line, set a high pace for the game. On the home team’s side, the baton was held by Hackett, who had 3/3 three-pointers and 9 points, while for the visitors, Edwards scored 8 points in the first quarter, which ended with a score of 22-24.

Same pattern in the second quarter, with the players seeing the opponent’s basket as… a barrel. Sengelia with 9 and Lundberg with 7 points, took the baton in scoring for Virtus, while on the Bayern side, Edwards, who reached 16, found a supporter in the person of Ibaka, who was also in double figures with 10. The half ended with 42-46.

Attacks continued to dominate, with defenses looking like… Swiss cheese! Apart from the accuracy, the players of the two teams were not particularly pressured by their opponents, easily reaching a shooting position. Bayern steadily maintained a lead of between four and six points, with Edwards continuing to “shoot” from everywhere. The one who kept Virtus “up” was Sengelia, with the score of the third quarter being 65-69.

With a three-pointer by Obst, the guests went to +8 (66-74), however, the hosts had an immediate “answer” and with a 7-0 run, reduced the difference to the minimum value. The game was going point to point and everything looked like it would be decided in the details, and it was. Three minutes before the finale, Cordinier gave the lead to Virtus (81-79), who managed to keep it until the end and reach a valuable, as well as stressful, victory with a final score of 85-83.

The quarters: 22-24, 42-46, 65-69, 85-83.
