American Shaun White, 35, a snowboard legend after winning three Olympic golds in the half-pipe, was without a medal this Friday (11) at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. It was his last competition before retiring. He finished in fourth place, in a race won by Japanese Ayumu Hirano, 23.
The athlete scored 85 points as the best record, while Hirano took the gold, ahead of the Australian Scotty James and the Swiss Jan Scherrer.
The three-time champion was fighting for a medal after completing his first two rounds, but crashed in the third when he needed to beat Scherrer.
White looked disheartened in the finish area, before smiling and waving to the crowd.
Hirano took the title with a grand final round, in which the Japanese, who had won two Olympic silvers before this gold, had a score of 96.
James, who won bronze at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, finished second with 92.50 points, while Scherrer was third with 87.25.
White had to settle for fourth after being first in Turin-2006, Vancouver-2010 and Pyeongchang-2018. In Sochi-2014 he was fourth, as in Beijing-2022.
One of the biggest names in the history of snowboarding, he had already stated that the Beijing Games will be his last Olympic contest in his career.
“I gave it my all. There were some ups and downs on the way to get here, so I feel like I’ve become stronger and better,” White told the official website of the Olympics when announcing the farewell.
