by

THE Yannick Siner he was the big winner in the Australian Open final. The 22-year-old Italian, number 4 in the world ranking, after dominating the Melbourne Grand Slam in the semi-finals, “cleaned” in the final the Daniel Medvedev with a reversal, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and 6-3. The exciting final lasted 3 hours and 45 minutes.

THE Russian (No. 3)with two key breaks in the first two sets he managed to gallop to a 2-0 set, 6-3, 6-3, but Schinner did not “bend”. He paid his opponent with the same coin, winning the next two 6-4 and 6-4. In the fifth set the Italian broke the Russian’s serve in the fifth game to take a 4-2 lead and held his serve to win 6-3.

Thus he became only the third Italian to win a Grand Slam and the first to win the Australian Open. They were preceded by Nicola Pietrangeli in 1959 and 1960 at Roland Garros and Adriano Panata at the French Open in 1976.

This was Shiner’s first career Grand Slam title in his maiden final appearance, while Medvedev held on to the US Open trophy in 2021 having now lost three finals in Australia (2021, 2022, 2024). The Russian reached the final with three wins in the fifth set, but the fourth time was also fatal.
