The vessel was sailing towards the northern shores of the island without navigation lights
The Coast Guard proceeded to locate and rescue 8 foreigners and arrest their 24-year-old smuggler on Saturday night.
According to an announcement, last night, a Coast Guard vessel patrolling the sea area of Symi spotted an inflatable boat, without navigation lights, moving from the coast of Turkey to the northern shores of the island.
The Coast Guard vessel, during the approach, made light and sound signals from the L.S.-EL.AKT. vessel, to which the operator of the high-speed vessel did not respond. A chase then ensued, during which the speedboat made dangerous maneuvers in an attempt to ram the patrol boat.
The crew of the patrol boat stopped the speedboat and rounded up nine foreigners, one of whom was an unconscious woman. She was immediately given first aid by the LS-EL.AKT. staff, as a result of which she regained consciousness.
The occupants of the speedboat were taken to the port of Symi, while the woman and two other people who needed treatment were taken by a patrol boat to Rhodes and from there by an EKAV ambulance to the General Hospital of Rhodes.
A 24-year-old foreigner was arrested by the Symi Port Authority, which is conducting the preliminary investigation, who was recognized and pointed out by the others as the smuggler – skipper of the boat.
