Las Palmas’ Sergio Cardona is on Barcelona’s radar

by

Interest has been expressed by Barcelona for Sergio Cardona of Las Palmas who had been very close to Olympic the summer.

The 24-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of this year, making him an affordable solution given the club’s financial woes. The Spanish left-back is earmarked as a replacement for the injured Alejandro Balde, who will miss the rest of the season.

La Liga’s rules on financial controls include a special section that gives clubs flexibility should a registered player suffer an injury that will keep them out for more than four months.

According to Article 77 of La Liga’s financial regulations, the affected club can declare a replacement as long as his salary does not exceed 80 percent of the injured person’s salary.

Barcelona relied on this to bring in Vitor Roque to replace the injured Gavi with the Brazilian striker signing on for the Spaniard.

The first thing we have to do is try to be clear about Balde’s situation, the medical tests are being carried out, it is a matter that internally we have to do with the doctors, with the player, with his staff, with the coach. Also, if it becomes clear that we can do something in the transfer market we will try it, for sure» were the words of the sports director, Deco.

A solution for the left-back position can of course also be found from within, with Joao Cancelo playing there in the defeat against Villarreal, while Marcos Alonso and 17-year-old Hector Fort are also on the roster.

Sergi Cardona has made 22 appearances in all competitions for Las Palmas this year with one assist.
