A video circulating on social media shows an alleged failure by military police to help motoboy Dante Luiz Oliveira, 40, who died Saturday (12) after clashes between Palmeiras fans and the PM, after the team’s defeat to Chelsea, 2-1, in the Club World Cup final. The violence took place in a street near the Allianz Parque stadium, in Pompeii (west of the capital).
Prison guard José Ribeiro Apostolo Júnior, 42, is in prison for being suspected of having fired the shot that killed the fan.
In the video, the person making the recording, apparently with a cell phone, shows about ten military police officers, some with Rocam helmets (Ostensive Rounds with Motorcycle Support), next to a fence, next to the victim. “Nobody wants to help the guy here”, he narrates, then showing the immobile supporter lying on the street, facing the asphalt, being helped by two Palmeiras.
Then, the author of the footage starts to record several police cars parked a few meters away. In the audio of the recording, other people can be heard asking for an ambulance.
The footage records that more fans approach the fallen motoboy and that others try to talk to the police on the other side of the fence. The 45-second recording does not show whether the officers go to the victim.
Asked if there was an omission and about the veracity of the video, the Military Police said in a note that they called specialized help to attend to the victim shot.
“Due to the severity of the injury, assistance in any other form of transport would be inappropriate. [Uma] The fire department’s advanced support rescue unit attended to the victim, provided first aid at the scene and immediately took her to the Hospital das ClÃnicas,” the statement said.
The São Paulo police ombudsman, Elizeu Soares Lopes, said that this Monday (14th) he will request that the PM’s Internal Affairs investigate the conduct of the police.
“Although it is not possible to know what the attitudes were after the population’s cry for help, the fact is that the images show a lack of action”, he says, saying that he was impressed with the passivity of the PMs.
Lopes called Saturday’s violence barbarism, which involved clashes between Palmeiras fans themselves and the Military Police.
“The culture of peace needs to be immediately resumed, involving everyone, fans, sports federations, governments and especially the media, including incentives in the form of prizes. Life is the greatest good,” he said.
“This cowardly and infamous act is not out of line with the reality of Brazil, unfortunately encouraged by the federal government, which makes it more flexible and encourages the carrying of weapons. Look at the good man, without any compassion, taking another person’s life”, he said.
The prison guard said in a statement to the court that he was persecuted by members of an organized crowd and that he does not know if the shot that killed the motoboy was made by him. Judge Renato Augusto Pereira Maia turned this Sunday (13) into preventive the arrest in flagrante delicto of José Ribeiro Apostolo Júnior.
The prison guard’s defense said that he filed for habeas corpus to ensure his right to respond freely to the process.
On Saturday, the deputy commander of the 4th Battalion of the PM, Major Fábio Teodoro, said that the fight between fans and the shooting started a riot in the place where Palmeiras went to watch the final. According to the official, a man would have run from others towards a fence that separated the PM from the Alviverde crowd.
After the shooting, according to the sub-commander, some individuals burst through the fence and charged at agents of the corporation.
“To maintain the safety of the police, family members and others who were here with children, we had to intervene. Shock action was necessary”, said the major.
