His retirement from professional tennis, at the age of 44, was announced by Ivo Karlovic. The 2.11m tall Croatian went down in history because of his ability to ace, as he counted more than 13,000, causing problems for even the best of the courts. He celebrated eight titles at the ATP level, the last of which came in 2016.
“Some of you have noticed that it’s been a while since I’ve played in a tournament and you keep asking me daily if and when I’ll be back on tour” wrote Karlovic on Twitter, and went on to mention among other things: “I’m sorry to disappoint you, but I want to make it official and finally announce my retirement. I’ve had a very enjoyable, unorthodox and long career that came from extremely humble beginnings, especially for a tennis player. Croatia was a very different country in the 80s and 90s when I was growing up, and I am very proud of my achievements and what I was able to overcome».
He celebrated in his career 13,728 aces, a haul second only to John Isner’s 14,470. At the same time, Karlovic “wrote” one of the fastest serves in tennis, as the speed with which he “traveled” the ball in a Davis Cup match in 2011 was measured at 251 km/h. The now-veteran Croatian reached as high as world No. 14 in 2008 after overcoming then-No. 1 Roger Federer on his way to the semifinals of the tournament in Cincinnati.
