Panathinaikos: Cyrus Margono gets Indonesian citizenship and becomes an international player!

In the summer of 2021 the Panathinaikos acquired for the B team an unknown goalkeeper from America, still 19 years old (his birthday is November 9) Cyrus Margono. A splash with… three different countries of origin! And this is because Margono was born and raised in New York, his mother, however, is from Iran and his father from Indonesia.

So, for the last few years now, she has been trying to solve bureaucratic problems, in order to obtain the tall (1.90m) goalkeeper the nationality and wear the jersey of the national team of the country! After all, this was also his wish. It is characteristic that in Indonesia the young goalkeeper is often the subject of the media. Last summer, for example, special mention was made in CNN Indonesia, the fact that Cyrus Margono was included in the “clover” squad for the main stage of the preparation in Austria. Or recently, last January, when the Fatih Terim took him on the mission for the derby with AEK after Rapid developments with Alberto Brignoli and before acquiring, of course, o Bartholomew Dragowski.

It should be noted that the youngster started at the Metropolitan Oval academy, along the way he entered the Inter academy, located in the US and then followed by Denver and Kentucky, before ending up in Athens and Panathinaikos. In the B team of the “greens” he has a total of 17 appearances.

The news now, which concerns Margonos and has been playing loudly in the Indonesian media since yesterday, is that, as he revealed through his Instagram story, the process of becoming an Indonesian citizen is almost complete! Soon, that is, he will get back the Indonesian passport he once had.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper said that his documents to become an Indonesian citizen have been received by the foreign minister and stressed that he is looking forward to being able to strengthen the Indonesian national team. “I can’t wait to wear these football boots and I’m happy to report that my process is almost completeCyrus Margono wrote on his Instagram account. “It has been several weeks since my documents arrived at the State Secretariat and we are very close. I am really looking forward to the time when I can accept my Indonesian identity again, God willing“, he added.
