by

The Kenyan Benson Cyprus took first place in the Tokyo Marathon, clocking 2 hours 2 minutes 16 seconds and bettering the course record in the Japanese capital held by former world record holder Eliud Kipchoge (2:02:40). Kipruto finished 39 seconds ahead of compatriot Timothy Kiplagat and added the Tokyo title to his… trophy case, which is still adorned with firsts in Boston in 2021 and Chicago in 2022. The top three men added another Kenyan, Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, with a performance of 2:04:18.

Meanwhile, in the women’s race, We shoot Asefa Kebede from Ethiopia won with a time of 2:15:55 and bettered the previous women’s course record, which was set in 2022 by Bridget Kosgei of Kenya (2:16:02). Kebede battled Rosemary Wanjiru of Kenya, who was the winner of last year’s event. Finally, the runner from Ethiopia managed to break away from the race and win the first “big” Marathon of her career with a difference of 19 seconds. Third place was taken by another runner from Ethiopia, Amane Beriso, with 2:16:58, which left at least a minute behind the Dutch Tokyo “gold” Olympic champion in 5,000 and 10,000 meters, Sifan Hassan, who finished Wednesday.
