Plastic Bank, a company born in Canada, which operates in Brazil, Indonesia, among other places, in recycling with its own system known as Plástico Social, recently celebrated the collection of 2 billion plastic bottles, the PET’s.
According to the company, the second billion milestone was reached twelve times faster than the first one and almost 2 million kilograms of plastic were collected in Brazil.
With more than two thousand collectors registered in Brazil, the company intends to operate in São Paulo and Espírito Santo soon, as for now it is only present in Rio de Janeiro, with forty collection points. In all, more than 97 million PET bottles were collected.
For David Katz, chief executive of Plastic Bank, plastic pollution and its impact on the oceans is one of the world’s most significant challenges. “Collecting two billion PET bottles is testament to the fact that each of us can be a hero in reducing plastic waste while improving the lives of the people who collect it,” says Katz.
Plastic Bank’s general director in Brazil, Helena Pavese, comments that operating in the country is essential to accelerate the company’s global goals. “Everyone should have a clear mission to help reduce the volume of plastic that reaches the oceans. We want to transform incorrect disposal and the devaluation of the work of collectors into a virtuous cycle”, says Helena.
