Alavés made a mythical mess in Girona! The Catalan team was holding tightly in their hands their fourth straight “three points” in the league, but a goal by Gouridis in the ninth minute of stoppage time, gave the Basques a draw (2-2).
Huge missed opportunity for Girona to escape Barcelona in four and have a safety “cushion” for the 2nd place, however, the 11th Alaves, alienated it and left the “blaugrana” within shooting distance.
Villarreal will be welcomed to Montilivi next matchday by Girona, a difficult task at the “Santiago Bernabeu” for Alaves.
The match
THE Girona entered the match strongly and managed to take the lead in the score just in the 4th minute. Chigankov takes a corner from the right with the ball coming into the area where the Eric Garcia he rose higher than everyone and with a perfect header beat Obono for 0-1.
The hosts took measures on the pitch and eight minutes later managed to level the match. The ball came quickly from right to left with Simeone turning the ball to Gouridis who, with the movement, sent the ball into Gassaniga’s net to level the score at 1-1.
The pace of the match was excellent with Alaves threatening in the 19th minute with Xavi Lopez, while in the 36th minute Savio responded with a low shot that forced Obono into a difficult intervention.
However, just before halftime, Girona managed to regain the lead. After a pass in the area, Dovbik took control, back-heeled the ball beautifully to Herrera, who with a terrific placement sent the ball over the crossbar and then into the net for 1-2.
In the second half, Alaves tried to shut down Girona, which for its part was chasing the third goal through some counterattack. Both Savio and Herrera came close to making it 1-3, with Alaves having good moments to equalise.
The tension between the players rose with plenty of nerves and marking on both sides. And while everything showed that Alaves will leave the home of Alaves with victory, the home team managed to find a goal in the last phase of the match with Gouridis for the final 2-2!
