“Trial in the Open” revealed that the Athens sports prosecutor, Kostas Spyropoulos, brought criminal charges for the case of the Greek version of the international illegal betting ring.
They were needed 14 months of research from the Financial Police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations. In fact, arrest warrants are issued and the case is referred to the investigator.
THE prosecution identifies the activity of a criminal organization with crimes of a felony nature: Illegal betting, alteration of match results, forgery, money laundering and money laundering.
THE case file concerns 173 natural persons and was separated due to the rejection of Spyropoulos’ request before the Athens Criminal Court to lift confidentiality. Most of those involved who emerged from the Greek investigation are asked to submit written explanations without trial to the Economic Police. In fact, the case file mentions only their initials and not their full names.
Those already facing criminal charges emerged from Europol’s investigation, which began in February 2021 in six countries, including Greece. Home searches and digital media seizures had preceded it.
The 173 persons are included sports agents, coaches, footballers and bookies.
The Greek investigation is overseen by the head of sports matters, the deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Giorgos Oikonomou.
