Uefa condemns Russian invasion of Ukraine and must change Champions League final venue

by

UEFA, the governing body of European football, took a stand on Thursday (24) on the invasion of Russian troops in Ukraine and condemned the military action ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The entity has scheduled for this Friday (25) an extraordinary meeting in which it will discuss, among other issues related to the theme, the probable withdrawal from the Champions League final in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

The game that will decide the European champion of the 2021/2022 season is scheduled for May 28.

“UEfa shares the international community’s concern about the security situation in Europe,” the body said in a statement.

“We are dealing with this situation seriously and urgently. Decisions will be taken by the UEFA Executive Committee and announced tomorrow (Friday).”

At the meeting scheduled for this Friday, Uefa members will not only be able to communicate the change of venue for the Champions League final, but also impose sanctions against Moscow and Russian football, following the line adopted by some countries.

The St Petersburg stadium, which was supposed to host the final of the European competition, is named after the gas giant Gazprom. The company has been one of UEFA’s main sponsors since 2012.

Schalke 04, one of the most traditional clubs in Germany and the one with the biggest fans in the country, announced that it will no longer display the name of Gazprom, its sponsor, on its uniform.

The decision was posted on the team’s official Twitter account, hours after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

With a market value of US$ 73.5 billion (R$ 377.4 billion, at the current price), Gazprom is the oldest sponsor of Schalke 04, has been with the club since 2006 and pays around US$ 13 million annually to print your name on the shirt.
