Zuckerberg reveals metaverse-focused artificial intelligence projects

Meta is working on artificial intelligence research to be able to generate online worlds, improve the way people “talk” to voice assistants and obtain speech translations in different languages, the company’s president said on Wednesday (23). , Mark Zuckerberg.

The executive bets that the metaverse, an idea developed by science fiction in which virtual worlds can be accessed by users to work, socialize and entertain, will be the successor of the mobile internet.

“The key to achieving many of these advances is artificial intelligence,” said the Facebook founder during the company’s event.

Zuckerberg said Meta is working on a new class of artificial intelligence (AI) models that will allow the generation of virtual worlds based on descriptions made by people. In a pre-recorded demo, Zuckerberg showed off an AI concept called “Builder Bot,” in which he appears as a 3D avatar on an island and dictates commands to the system to create a beach, add clouds, trees, and even a beach towel. picnic.

“As we advance with this technology, users will be able to create worlds to explore and share experiences with others just by using their voice,” said Zuckerberg. He didn’t say when these developments will be ready or give details on how the Builder Bot works.

Zuckerberg stated that Meta is working on AI research to enable people to have more natural conversations with voice assistants, a step towards how people will interact with metaverse AIs. He stated that the company’s “CAIRaoke” project is a “fully neural model for building assistants”.

A demo of the CAIRaoke project showed a family using the tool to help prepare a stew, with the voice assistant telling them that salt had already been added to the food. The assistant also warned that the house was running low on salt and bought more online.

Meta also stated that it is using the AI model in its Portal video calling device and intends to integrate it into the device along with augmented and virtual reality capabilities. The company said it is restricting CAIRaoke’s responses until it is certain the system will not say offensive terms.

Zuckerberg also announced that Meta is working on a universal speech translator, to provide real-time translations of all languages. The company had previously mentioned the objective of getting the system to produce translations of all written languages.

The executive stated that Meta is preparing a way for AI to interpret and predict the types of interactions that could occur in the metaverse when working with a system of “self-supervised learning”, in which the AI receives a pure set of data instead. to be trained with lots of pre-sorted data.

Zuckerberg further said that Meta is working on “self-centered data,” which involves viewing worlds from a first-person perspective. He said the company has brought together a global consortium of 13 universities and labs to work together on a self-centered database called Ego4D.

In a nod to transparency, Meta plans to open-source the TorchRec recommendation library that the company uses to personalize Facebook’s news feed, said vice president of artificial intelligence Jerome Pesenti. The company will also publish a ranking prototype to show how its algorithms prioritize what content the social network shows users on Instagram.

Some of the projects Meta announced on Wednesday, such as the CAIRaoke project and the transparency effort, echo similar innovations announced in recent years by rivals such as Google.
