The world champion and this year’s Formula 1 overall points leader overcame the difficulties he faced due to the rain to take first place on lap 25 and never looked back, celebrating his sixth win of the year in nine races!
In second place o Lando Norris (McLaren), who was named the best driver of the night, while the podium was also won by George Russell (Mercedes), who had started from pole position. Verstappen was closing the gap on leader Russell but lost valuable time after making a mistake on the exit at the start of lap 17, seeing Norris to approach him. In fact, four laps later Norris took advantage of DRS and after first overtook him Verstappen, he also took first place from Russell, who then “cut” the final chicane, falling behind the Dutch Red Bull pilot. At the same time, 4th Piastri was the fastest on the track, while the Ferraris of Leclerc and Saint remained outside the top ten.
In the 25th round o Sargent he lost control, sending his car into the bars and with the safety car making an appearance, all drivers except Norris pitted. When the McLaren driver finally came in for a tire change, he returned 3rd, behind Verstappen and Russell.
The safety car retired on lap 30, with Verstappen to have benefited greatly from his presence, as before Sargent’s crash he was 10” behind Norris and found himself in the lead. At the same time, Leclerc continued to have a very bad race, suffering engine trouble and delaying the pits, falling last and seeing Verstappen, Russell and Norris… lap him. He finally retired from the race for good on the 43rd lap, while a little earlier Norris had an exit at the first corner, remaining 3rd but affecting Russellwhich saw Verstappen increase the gap between them.
Verstappen and Russell they pitted for a tire change on lap 46, with Norris pitting a lap later, gaining one place from Russell but remaining behind the Dutchman’s Red Bull. However, Norris made a mistake on lap 50, allowing Russell to reclaim 2nd, before the Mercedes driver made a mistake in turn, dropping back to 3rd.
On the 55th lap, Russell entered the pits, losing the 3rd place to Piastri, while on the 54th, the second also retired Ferrari, with Saint unable to continue after crashing with Albon. A little later, Perez also left, after exiting the barriers, while Verstappen was opening the gap from his pursuers. In lap 66 Hamilton passed Russell, moving up to 3rd, but on the penultimate lap Russell clawed his way back, taking the podium position. Finally, Mr Verstappen he comfortably took the win, leaving behind Norris and Russell.
