THE Diego Alonso it’s been a few hours o new coach of Panathinaikoswith the Uruguayan making his first statements to the PAO TV camera.
Among other things, the coach of the “clover” referred to what he knows about his new team, the elements he wants to introduce into their game and also… the revenge he is looking for after his short stay with Sevilla.
What he said in detail:
“This is a very big club, the biggest in the country. I know that in the last three years he won the Cup twice.
We are ready for the championship and I believe we will be able to win it.
I have seen all the matches of Panathinaikos. And coached by Jovanovic and Terim. The team was playing good football, they came close to winning the championship. In the end he didn’t make it. The team has a good foundation, which we intend to improve in order to achieve our goals.
This is a very large group. It was a challenge to take over a team with championship goals. I really wanted it, I’m a manager who plays for titles and I like my team to star. I know that Panathinaikos has been without a championship for 14 years, so for me it is a very big opportunity to chase the title.
One more thing. I was completely covered by the plan that the technical director presented to me and the words that the team president said to me. This is a project that I want to serve with great pleasure.
I got a lot of information, talked to colleagues to form a general opinion about the club, the league, the country. All information was positive. I was very impressed by the seriousness with which football is approached by both the president and the administration, which gave me peace of mind. We talked about the reinforcement we need in the roster and we will move forward well.
What I want is to win. I have always wanted my teams to be the stars in my career. I like it and my teams have always had tension. Pressure up, controlling the pace of the match. This is the philosophy I want to get across. A team that will have tension, will press will have control of the game.
The first and most important thing a coach must do is to consider everyone as his family. If the feeling of family is created then everything is easier. My concern is that we are united. Football players, staff, fans. If we all work together for the goal, things will become easier. Undoubtedly, it is a very big opportunity that Panathinaikos gave me and I thank him. For me this position is a revenge for everything that happened in Seville, where I stayed for a very short time and for this reason the results were not the desired.
I want to thank the president again for giving me the opportunity. I will do my best to meet the requirements.
Pressure is common for coaches. These challenges in Panathinaikos exist every season. We have to prepare as best as possible for the first official match. Transfers close on August 31st and the aim is to get the players we need to progress as we want. We will be working a lot with the team from day one. I set the final photo for August 31st in order to prepare the roster that will achieve the goals in Greece and Europe”.
