Elizabeth Terpou competed on Tuesday in the Star Contender table tennis of Slovenia which started in Ljubljana and will last until next Sunday. She lost in the first qualifying round to the Romanian champion, immediately meeting the high level of competition, however, she applied pressure with a respectable performance and, in any case, her second experience in a prized Star category tournament was useful.
Terpu (number 374 in the world ranking) was also in the Slovenian event in 2023 and declared participation again this year because she wanted some matches at the end of the season. She was waiting, as there is a numerical limit of participation, but after the pre-Olympic tournament of Europe, where she had also taken part, she was notified that she was accepted by special invitation. The Slovenians had given a wild card to our champion last year and with a similar move they invited her again to Hala Tivoli.
In the first qualifying round, she was drawn with Romanian Ioanna Singeorzan, number 107 in the world today. With a good competitive face, he chased the surprise and took the lead in the score. She fell behind only intermittently and this cost her the second and third sets. He found himself behind in the next set as well, but with a strong run he tied it at 10-10 and got two set points to send the match to 2-2. Singeorzan saved them and won the final 3-1 set in overtime (11-6, 5-11, 5-11, 13-15).
The 20-year-old Romanian also became known to the Greek public last year in Orestiada, as she had won the gold medal in the junior singles and doubles of the Balkan Championship.
