Opinion – Tostão: Invasion of Brazil is carried out by foreign technicians and investors

by

Sad and regrettable the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, with so much destruction and death, a war that we never imagined could happen nowadays.

Not all coaches, even the most scientifically prepared, become great professionals, but to be an excellent coach, it is essential to have a lot of academic knowledge. It’s not enough to know. You need to know how to do it.

Portugal has many coaches around the world, good and bad, because it has a traditional training school. In addition to technical and tactical knowledge, Portuguese coaches are clear, didactic and like to explain their behavior, which delights managers, fans and the press.

Brazilian coaches no longer fascinate fans because many have become stagnant after decades of repetition and addiction. The demand for so many foreign, Portuguese and South American technicians, especially from Argentina, is not just a fad. Of the most veteran Brazilian coaches who manage the country’s teams, only Abel Braga remains present and efficient. Abel also worked for a long time in Portugal and, certainly, incorporated a concern with academic knowledge.

On the other hand, there are a large number of studious young Brazilian coaches, who should be better used, in addition to being cheaper than those from abroad. The CBF technician training course contributes to this evolution, although everyone complains that it is very expensive.

Since the 1960s, there has also been a prejudice against Brazilian coaches, that the national team fascinated and won only because of the players. Zagallo, in the 1970 World Cup, was very important in the conquest.

The importation of foreign coaches by Brazil is old, since the 1950s, with the arrival of several South Americans, such as Fleitas Solich and Filpo Núñez, and some Hungarians, such as Izidor Kürschner and Béla Guttmann, who helped in the evolution of Brazilian football. . Hungary had an exceptional team in 1954, when they beat Brazil 4-2.

The invasion of Brazil does not occur only by foreign technicians but also by investors, who want to buy clubs that are bankrupt and/or in dire financial situation. They want to improve the clubs and, with that, make more money. Football and the world have changed.

Several investors have bought big European clubs, which have become stronger, although there are many protests from fans, worried about the historic passions in the formation of their clubs. Technical growth, victories and titles attenuate nostalgia and affective feelings, however, if the results on the field are not good, protests return.

The solution for football is not just the creation of corporations. German teams adopt a different approach. The mighty Bayern Munich sold 49% of the shares to companies of great worldwide prestige and, with 51%, continues to manage the club. It unites business and passion.

Shortly after buying Botafogo, investor John Textor dismissed coach Enderson Moreira, champion of Série B. I found it strange and criticized the businessman. After reading your explanations, I redrafted my opinion. He justified that the club wants to invest in the basic categories and create a game model, a brand, more daring, more modern and more pleasant for the fans. For this, Botafogo hired a Portuguese coach, with experience in this type of work. Cruzeiro and Vasco follow a similar path. I hope it works out.
