Playing with their backs against the wall, since if they lost after yesterday’s defeat to Brazil again they would be out of the semi-finals, the Montenegro elicited a reaction and Cameroon prevailed 70-66 at the Riga Pre-Olympics. Cameroon now need a two-point win against Brazil on Thursday to qualify for the semi-finals.
Marko Simonovic led the way with 18 points and 6 rebounds, while Nikola Vucevic added 11 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Atemba with 14 and Bidya with 12 points stood out from the losers.
Cameroon were highly competitive in the first half. Thanks to his excellent defense, which was only troubled by Simonovic, he was not only close to the score, but ended the second period at +3, 29-32.
Montenegro came back … furious from the locker room and with a partial 15-2 round sat in the driver’s seat 44-34, with Vucevic taking the lead. The Africans did not lay down their weapons and at the beginning of the fourth period they came close to three (51-48) and although the Balkans were separated to nine (61-52), Cameroon became threatening again (61-57) two minutes before the end. A goal-foul by Perry, however, tipped the scales for good on the Montenegrin side and kept the Paris dream alive.
Ten minutes: 16-13, 29-32, 49-42, 70-66
