Athens Kallithea: Restructuring proposal in Super League 1 & 2

by

Restructuring proposal for its leagues Super League 1 and her Super League 2 the neophyte testified, Athens Kallitheasigned by the executive of the Southern Suburbs team, Ted Philippakos.

In detail, the Athens Kallithea announcement:

The following is Athens Kallithea’s proposal for the restructuring of the Super League championship, as well as the Super League 2 championship.

In view of the new President of the organizing authority of the Super League championship, Mr. Marinakis, whom we congratulate for his election, together with all the PAEs participating in the championship, Athens Kallithea FC submits a proposal for the restructuring of the Super League championship, as well as the Super League 2 championship.

The main points of our proposal are the following:

– From the 2025/26 season, increase the number of teams in the Super League championship to 16, with three teams relegated and three promoted per season.

– From the 2024/25 season, Super League championship playoffs for places 1-4 and playoffs for places 5-8 for a European ticket.

– From the 2024/25 season, running a Super League 2 league in a single group and a new playoff system partly based on that of the Italian Serie B and designed to maximize competitiveness and interest and minimize corruption.

The top 10 European leagues – England, Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium, Turkey and the Czech Republic – all have at least 16 clubs. If Greece aspires to return to the top 10 European leagues and at the same time improve the competitiveness of the national team, our top division must increase the number of teams to 16.

By increasing the participating teams to 16, the league will create (1) a more attractive investment environment, (2) a stronger product for fans, broadcasters and sponsors with greater national interest, and (3) a more expanded talent pool and environment for the development of Greek players.

In terms of the investment environment, we have been approached several times by Greek clubs, both from Super League 1 and Super League 2, to bring in foreign investors over the last two years, and this is something that could be possible under the suitable conditions, but not with the current size of the league or the current promotion and relegation system.

Furthermore, with regard to Super League 2, the extent to which the competitive and financial weakness of Super League 2 has a negative impact on the competitive and financial strength of Super League 1 has been underestimated. Our proposal will renew the incentive for Super League clubs 2 to invest, develop players and be competitive and will lead to a higher quality product with greater interest for fans, broadcasters and sponsors.
