As announced by World Athletics -and then adopted by the European federation- the Russians and Belarusians athletes will be left out of all competitions for 2022.
The exclusion applies even for athletes competing as independents, due to the punishment for doping cases in the Russian track and field federation. Also, coaches and officials of the games will be left out of the games.
«People are terrified of what Russia has done to support Belarus. World leaders tried to prevent the invasion through diplomacy, but to no avail, due to Russia’s immovable decision. Unprecedented sanctions imposed on Russia and Belarus by countries and industries around the world seem to be the only peaceful way to thwart Russia’s intentions and restore peace. Anyone who knows me will understand that imposing sanctions on athletes due to the actions of their government, finds me against it. I have protested against the practice of politicians targeting athletes and sports to pursue politics. But this is different, as governments, businesses and other international organizations have imposed sanctions and measures against Russia in all areas. Sport must stand tall and mobilize to end this war and restore peace. We can not and must not participate in this“, Said in a written statement the president of the world federation, Sebastian Coe.
