Cartier accuses Tiffany of unfair competition in the US

Cartier jewelry, owned by Swiss group Richemont, has filed a complaint in the United States against Tiffany & Co, which belongs to France’s LVMH, for alleged “unfair competition”, it said on Tuesday (1st).

Officials of the American brand would have tried to obtain information in an “inappropriate” way about Cartier’s activities in the United States, through a former employee, which led the brand to file the complaint, he told AFP.

The former employee, who left Cartier to work at Tiffany, is also named in the lawsuit, filed in a New York court.

“Cartier fully respects the right of its competitors to pursue its business objectives,” noted the panther brand, its best-known symbol. “But in this case, Tiffany’s business ambitions have crossed the line between business as usual and unfair competition.”

The jewelry store, known for the diadems worn by monarchs, is the Richemont group’s most important brand in terms of revenue.

“Tiffany formally denies these unfounded allegations and will vigorously defend itself,” replied the American brand, acquired last year by French luxury market giant LVMH.
