Panathinaikos fought, lost and went to Amsterdam to overcome

by

He was betrayed by his failure and paid for his quality Ajax Panathinaikos.

The “greens” had a very good image for a long period of the match against the Amsterdam team, they produced several quality phases, had disallowed goal with Mancinibut his goal Berghaus in the first half the Dutch rematch made them a “mountain” (0-1).

Back to action for Fotis Ioannidis who replaced Geremegev as a substitute and was deifiedbut failed to threaten. Djuricic is active, Arau is amazing in suspension.

At 15th of August the rematch at the “Johan Cruyff Arena” with Panathinaikos looking for victory at least with a goal to send the match to overtime.

In the minds of the coaches:

Panathinaikos’ Diego Alonso chose the exact same line-up as against Botev in Plovdiv in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Dragovski in goal, with Kochira, Ingason, Jedvai and Mladenovic at the back. Arao with Cerin and Bakashetta once again formed the trio of the midfield axis, while at the ends of the attack Mancini fought with Djuricic at the ends and Geremegev at the top!

His favorite 4-3-3 chose for him Ajax The Francesco Farioli. Pasvir sat under the posts with Rens, Soutalo, Baas and Hato in the back four. Henderson in the role of “six” with Taylor and Fitz-Jim flanking him. Forbes on the left, Berghaus on the right and Akpom on top for “Ayanda”.

The match:

With a small “monologue” from Ajax, the match at OAKA began, after the guests showed their intentions early on chasing the quick goal which would automatically make it difficult for Panathinaikos. The first notable moment of the match came in the 3rd minute and it was for the Amsterdam team. Forbes produced a beautiful effort from the left, bent and squared it to Akpom who made the move, feigned on Ingason, but his volley from the height of the box was weak and saved by the on-hand Dragovski.

The possession remained for a long time in the hands of the Dutch, with Panathinaikos in a passive role trying to steal the ball, which happened in the 12th minute of the match. Djuricic regained possession, took a few meters, passed to the left to Mladenovic who from the area made the shot, but Pasvir kicked it for a corner.

Farioli’s footballers mainly increased their intensity in the center area and with the quality Rensch and Berghaus they took timid measures on the field. In the 25th minute, in a wonderful development from the right, the Dutchman combined with Akpom, the former PAOK player returned it to him and dribbled into the right corner, but Dragovski was ready and saved with overpowering effort.

Ajax’s specific phase was… a warning as three minutes later “Aiantas” took the lead. The visitors developed from the right in a carbon move with the last phase of the match, Berghaus and Rensch played vertically and the experienced one-piece midfielder sent the ball into Dragovski’s closed corner for 0-1.

The goal seemed to… wake up Diego Alonso’s footballers who, with the push of the crowd, took steps on the pitch and approached Pasvir’s frames with claims, but without threatening with any of the static phases he had in his favor.

In the 44th minute, the “clover” found a breather from equalizing, when Cerin fed Bakaseta, who from the right side of the area and under the pressure of Taylor, tried to surprise Pasvir with a cross-shot, but the ball did not go he did him a favor, after he ended up on the post with the help of the 41-year-old Dutch goalkeeper.

Seconds later the promoted Cherin tried to score with a powerful shot, but the ball went wide in the last chance of the first half.

No changes, but with more mood at the start of the second half, Panathinaikos tried to find a quick equalizing goal. In the 52nd minute, Djuricic found Geremeev with a straight shot, who squared Pashvir, who parried, but the Swedish forward was exposed and the phase never counted.

Something similar happened in the 54th minute. Panathinaikos pressed high with Djuricic again on the receiving end, Bakasetas superbly crossing Mancini’s drive, who squared well in the back-to-back, but the goal was disallowed for offside with the replay ruling the assistant vindicated.

The minutes ticked by with Panathinaikos moving the ball around and continuing to pressurize the retreating Ajax. With the completion of one hour of the game, the “greens” came close to equalizing.

The fantastic Arao stole the ball, it reached Bakaseta who immediately passed it vertically to Geremegev, the Swede was in front of Pashvir, but his shot hit the outer net and went out.

Just after a few seconds, the Uruguayan coach made a triple change, throwing into the “battle” Tete, Baldoc, and Fotis Ioannidis, who was idolized by Panathinaikos fans.

The Ajax players tried in every way to play with the minds of the “greens” who briefly lost their rhythm in the match, but in the 78th minute they threatened after pressure that resulted in a shot by Djuricic which was countered and ended up in a corner by Pasvir’s intervention.

The match had reached the limits of the Ajax players who, with the right tactics, kept Panathinaikos away from the home of Pasvir, having… the help of the Slovak, Filip Glova, who did not stop whistling and constantly interrupting the pace of the match .

The continuation of the match found Ajax managing the result, Panathinaikos being disappointed by the development of the match which ended 1-0 for Farioli’s team.

MVP: Willian Arao played a very important match for Panathinaikos. The Brazilian was everywhere, cutting out several of Ajax’s interceptions and sacrificing useful free-kicks whenever necessary to keep his side from being exposed.

The “whistle”: The Slovak, Filip Glova, was very… irritating in several cases. A lot of “upside down” whistles, countless, wrong hints and “closed eyes” when the Dutch were playing delays from 55′. His refereeing is generally bad.

The elevens of the match:
