Monteiro’s win leaves Brazil tied with Germany in the Davis Cup

by

Thiago Monteiro kept Brazil alive in the dispute with Germany in the Davis Cup. At the end of the first day of the qualifying duel for the final stage of the traditional men’s tennis tournament between nations, the score of the best-of-five match is 1 to 1.

The Ceará native (216th in the world) beat Jan-Lennard Struff (60th) by 2 sets to 1, partial 6/3, 1/6 and 6/3. Supported by a noisy audience at the Barra Olympic Park, in Rio de Janeiro, he prevailed in decisive moments.

In the first match of the day, the Olympic champion Alexander Zverev, number three in the world, had confirmed his favoritism. He overcame Thiago Wild from Paraná in straight sets, partial 6/4 and 6/2.

The confrontation will end on Saturday with up to three matches. The first one will be doubles, probably these: Bruno Soares (19th in the doubles ranking) and Felipe Meligeni (42nd) against Tim Puetz (12th) and Kevin Krawietz (14th). Captains can still make substitutions.

Next, Monteiro will face Zverev. If necessary, there will be a decisive clash between Wild and Struff. The program will start at 2 pm, with broadcast by SporTV 3.

Monteiro’s important victory was his eighth in 16 games and nine matches for the Davis Cup, a competition in which he debuted in 2016. He was coming off the defeats against Australia in the 2020 qualifier away from home.

“It was crazy, an indescribable emotion. I experienced something similar at the Rio Open, but today it was outstanding. Running around the country is unique, everyone screaming my name. Representing the country is different. I’m happy to win the victory”, said Thiago.
