Mexican authorities arrest ten men for violence in Queretaro vs Atlas

by

Ten men were arrested as alleged responsible for the violent incidents that left at least 26 injured in a Mexican football league match last Saturday (5), at La Corregidora stadium, in Querétaro, informed this Tuesday (8) the Local prosecutor.

“In continuity with the investigative actions (…) due to what happened during the Querétaro-Atlas match, it is reported that the first ten men were arrested,” the Querétaro prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

They were arrested “for their possible participation in crimes of attempted murder, violence at sporting events and defense of crime,” the statement added.

On Monday night (7), a judge issued 26 arrest warrants after the alleged perpetrators of the fight – which started in the stands and later transferred to the field – were identified, thanks to images from the press and social networks.

The judge also authorized the search of the homes of the alleged perpetrators. A total of 82 sports clothes with the Querétaro badge, four pairs of sports shoes – some with possible blood stains –, 22 cell phones and other objects were seized.

The incidents erupted around 15 minutes into the second half of the match between Querétaro and Atlas, for the first division of Mexican football, when a group of fans from the local team advanced against the visiting crowd.

This generated a fight that led to the subsequent invasion of the field and the suspension of the game. The balance of the confusion was 26 injured who needed to be hospitalized, some in serious condition. As of Monday, nineteen of them had already been discharged.

A meeting of Liga MX club owners is scheduled for this Tuesday, in which the progress of investigations carried out by the Disciplinary Commission of the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) will be analyzed.
