It took the Turkish “civil war” and made it “2 on 2” in this year’s Euroleague Fenerbahce!
In a match that dominated from start to finish, maintaining double-digit values for a long time and even reaching at +15, Sarunas Jasikevicius’ team… needed it in the final, however, won the derby Anatolou Efes with a score of 83-78 at the “Basketball development center” for the 2nd matchday of the Euroleague.
Efes tried in the last seven minutes to “steal” the pink game sheet and complete an epic upset by tying it up at 74-74 at 38′, and while trailing -14 at 33′, two big 3-pointers notwithstanding from Gooduric and Zagars in the last minute led the whole of Fener to victory.
The first scorer for the winners was Coulson with 16 points, with Baldwin and Hayes-Davis to follow in performance with 11 points each. For Efes, which fell to 1-1, a terrible performance was made by Otorou with 21 points and 6 rebounds.
The match:
Excellent – as befits a derby – was the pace at the start of the match, with the Fenerbahce to enter the game with greater intensity and mood. It is indicative that the guests had 4 blocks in the first quarter of the match (!), during which they led 11-8 thanks to 3-pointers by Colson, Shanli and Goodrich. With Oturou (10 points in the period) leading her offense Effects the hosts overtook for 15-13 in the 6th minute, with the amazing Coulson (14 points in the quarter) to answer and with 9 collected points to put the Fener for the 21-27 of the season!

With six quick points by Biberovic, Birch and Zagars early in the second quarterthe team of Sarunas Jasikevicius went at +12 (21-33)while a little later, Biberovic’s three-pointer and Baldwin’s first basket of the match widened the gap at +15 (24-40) at 16′! In the rest of the period, Efes, who had difficulty finding the way to the opponent’s basket easily thanks to the very good defense of the visitors, found some points from the shooting line, reducing to 37-46 at halftime.

The scene was different in the second half and in third period, where tough defenses and many missed shots had the first say in the match. A condition which suited Fener, which comfortably maintained the difference in double digits, finding points from all positions. In the last minutes, Bryant came forward for Efes and reduced the gap somewhat, only for Beaubois to come in the last seconds with a shot behind from 6.75m. to write the 51-60 of the decade.
With a three-pointer by Stanley Johnson, Tomislav Mijatovic’s team cut to 6 (54-60) early in the fourth and last period. However, two shots by Cam Birch and two back-to-back 3-pointers by Baldwin then blew the lead at +14 and 54-68 in 33′, with Fene… cleaning up the job. But somewhere there came the counterattack of Efes, which Otorou and Larkin took it by the hand and brought it up to the tie for 74-74 at 38′! Two big three-pointers by Guduric and Zagars in the last minute, however, tipped the scales in favor of Fener, who took the big derby with final score 83-78.
