Vassilis Tsokas was the Greek fencer who stood out from the 80 who took part in the European Youth Cups held between 11-13 October in all three fencing weapons, winning the silver medal in the youth dueling sword.

Samorin hosted the Epee Cup (11-13/10) and Budapest the Dueling Sword and Epee Cups (12-13/10).

The 16-year-old Tsokas, an athlete of the Fencing Club of Florina (OXIF), reached his first international podium in a high-level event, starring among 375 athletes from 40 different countries who were “present” in Budapest.

In the quarter-finals, he saw off world junior champion and 2024 European junior bronze medalist Doruk Erolcevic of Turkey 15-13, before being beaten 15-10 by American Andy Zeng in the semi-finals.

The fencer from Florina, who was also crowned Greek men’s champion in 2024, shared the podium with three Americans, thus being the top European athlete in the event. At the same time, with the third place he secured 60 points for the European ranking of teenagers, in which he is expected to “climb” from No. 13 to No. 4. His first goal for the season is the U17 European Championship that will be held in Antalya, Turkey, 23-26/2.

From the rest of the Greek entries, Alina Kouroussi (AO Apollon Vrilission) made another remarkable appearance in the epee with the 17th place after the gold medal she had won in the first European Cup in Tbilisi.

Places in the top 64 were Fotis Minas (AO Theseas Heraklion), Nefeli Raspoptsi (OXIF) and Anna-Rafaela Salavoura (LO Varis) in dueling sword with 34th, 34th and 47th place respectively, while Giorgos Fradellos ( AO Apollon Vrilission) won the 44th place in the youth epee.

Antonis Goumas (AOX Aigaleo) and Kalliroi Naidi (GE Florina) had the best places in the exercise sword with 77th and 70th place respectively.

In total, 25 of Greece’s 80 fencers made it to the board of 128 in their weapons.
