In Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal’s Feeder World Table Tennis will be held from 23 to 27/11, with Katerina Toliou and Elisabeth Terpou entering their matches with the “right”. With very remarkable performances, they overcame the obstacles in the first round of the qualifiers and on Sunday they fight for the qualification to the main table of “64”.

The tournament is held “at the Pavilhao Desportivo Municipal” with 32 athletes present in the qualifying phase and 40 seeded to be already in the first round of the main draw. Our female champions only participate in singles.

Toliou (number 16 of the qualifiers) faced Mariana Santa from the “host” country (No. 22) and her task turned out to be very difficult. The first two sets were narrowly decided at 1-1, then our defensive-style international kept the ball on the table a lot and prevailed in the crucial moments to reach the final 3-1 set (13-11, 9-11, 11-6 , 14-12).

Terpuu (No. 17) met Moldovan Alexandra Chiriakova (No. 29) in the first qualifier, who had reached the main draw at this year’s European Men’s and Women’s Championship in Leeds. Our champion took control of the match from the beginning, maintained a good pace and prevailed with a 3-0 set (11-7, 11-5, 11-9).

In the crucial second qualifying round the girls take on another competitive challenge. It was a given that they will have high obstacles in front of them, but in their case there is a coincidence: They are facing the two gymnasts who today eliminated the first two favorites of the qualifiers.

At the top of the knockouts, Toliou will face at 19:45 Greece (table 2) Spain’s Eugenia Sastre (number 21 of the qualifying stage), who defeated Korea’s Kim Hana in 3-1 sets on Saturday.

At the base of the scoreboard, Terpou faces at the same time (table 1) the French player Agath Avezou (No. 11), who earlier defeated the Argentine Lucia Cordero with a 3-0 set.
