THE Mike James was hosted on the ‘Off The RECourt’ podcast by Shane Larkin and Elijah Bryantand talked about many interesting topics, while taking a stand on its format Euroleague.
In particular, he emphasized that it would be better for the teams and in general for brand of Europe’s top competition, to become a completely closed league, with the same teams every year on NBA standards. At the same time, he mentioned that Euroleague teams could go straight into the playoffs in the domestic leagues so that they can devote themselves to their European commitments.
What he said in detail:
On whether he would like to see a completely closed league: “I hope it happens. I’m not going to be here when it happens, but I hope so. It will just be a better brand, you will be able to promote it better, more people will definitely watch it. It just opens up more things like having more money, having a better TV deal, the league could be sponsored by a company like, everybody wearing an Adidas jersey, Nike, that kind of thing. I know money isn’t everything, but as a league we don’t make that much money, I don’t even know if we make any money at all.”
On what this would mean for the leagues: “I’m not saying the domestic leagues are the problem because they also need money, and obviously the bigger teams generate a lot of it, but something has to be found. Someone will say, man, I’m losing too much money. I’d like to see us straight into the playoffs, let’s start as fifth.”
