The relevant announcement in detail:
“The administration of TAA Athlos Orestiadas announces the start of the collaboration with the Canadian athlete Nigel Nielsen, in the context of further strengthening our team for the remainder of the Men’s Volleyball League 2024-25. The 24-year-old talented athlete, who has been in our country for a few hours, after his term in the Canadian Collegiate Championship, will compete for our team for the first time as a professional.
Born on January 27, 2000 in Selkirk, Manitoba, Nigel Nielsen is 1.96m tall. He is a graduate of Winnipeg Wesmen University, where competing in 22 Canada West Region games he finished the season with a total of 303 attacks, 18 aces, 115 defenses and 40 blocks.
In addition to other major individual league honors, he finished 7th in attacks and 13th in attacks per set at the University Championships in his country. In Canada he was consistently one of the top physical players and top scorers at 3.3-4.2 points/set during his career.
In 2017 Nielsen represented Manitoba at the Canada Summer Games, a biennial multi-sport event considered the premier domestic sporting event for talented Canadian athletes.
The new acquisition of our team, who yesterday even watched the match with Panathinaikos in Alexandroupoli alongside the president Giorgos Tsolakidis, expressed his enthusiasm for his collaboration with Athlos.
“I’m really excited to be racing in Orestiada for the rest of the season! This will be my first time in Greece. I am grateful for the opportunity given to me by Athlos Orestiadas to make this transatlantic trip to compete and develop in a high-level league, like the Greek one, and I thank the management for that,” Nielsen said.
“The Volley League is a popular league among Canadian players and so this is a huge opportunity for me. I know it’s a really competitive league with a lot of world-class players and passionate fans and I’m looking forward to meeting my new teammates, coaches and of course our fans.”
