Best campaign of the Campeonato Paulista so far, Palmeiras won the classic against Santos by 1-0, this Sunday (13), at Allianz Parque.
The victory of the alviverde team comes three days after the triumph in another classic, against São Paulo, also by 1 to 0, in Morumbi, where Palmeiras had not beaten the tricolor team for 25 years in the State.
The team led by Abel Ferreira leads group C with 26 points and arrives packed for the derby against Corinthians, next Thursday (17), at 20:30, also at Allianz Parque. Corinthians lead group A, with 20 points, and thrashed Ponte Preta 5-0 in the last duel.
This Sunday, Palmeiras pressured the ball out from the beginning of the match, making it difficult to set up the Santos midfield, Ricardo Goulart’s responsibility.
Santos’ number 10, closely marked by the Palmeiras and substituted in the second half, was the author of the best chances of the alvinegra team, in the half of the first half: two headers at the entrance of the small area. One of them hit the inside of the post, with no chance for Weverton, but it came back in the hands of the goalkeeper.
It was in stoppage time in the first half that Palmeiras reached the first and only goal of the match. In the left corner of a corner away by goalkeeper João Paulo, defender Velázquez tried to push the ball away by raising his foot high and hitting Kuscevic squarely inside the area. The Santos player received the second yellow card and was expelled.
In charge, Raphael Veiga maintained perfection in penalty kicks for Palmeiras: there are 19 goals in 19 kicks since he joined the team.
The pressure from Palmeiras in the first half only increased with one more player, mainly on the sides. In at least five opportunities, Santos had deflections or was saved by goalkeeper João Paulo in the second half.
Santos, on the other hand, with one less and without their main point guard in the first half, almost didn’t finish the Palmeiras goal and demanded little from the goalkeeper Weverton.
With the victory, Palmeiras reached 26 points, and Santos stopped at 10 points, with four consecutive games without winning and in third place in group D.
