Ataman: “The NBA is a great opportunity for all European coaches – What Giannakopoulos told me and I came to PAO”

by

A first taste of his long interview Ergin Atamanwhich will air at 5 pm on Wednesdays on the channel “SKWEEK”was released. His Turkish coach Panathinaikou revealed what he was told by Dimitris Giannakopoulos and convinced him to come to the “clover”, while among other things he mentions the NBA and his son.

On why he chose Panathinaikos:Giannakopoulos said he respected me as a coach, but he believed in me, he saw me as a leader. I was proud when he told me that. When he said he loves me as a person, for my character, I accepted straight away».

On how to become a good coach:It is not important to know very good basketball or to understand the technical elements and systems. What counts is passion, confidence and a willingness to improve yourself. Never think you are enough, you are not. And of course, you need luck».

On whether his son will become a coach one day:He has a great passion for the sport, and I hope it becomes his profession one day. Do you know what he’s telling me? “I don’t want to go to college, I want to start professionally as an assistant coach.” I said no. I didn’t realize my dream of becoming the first European coach in the NBA, but I told him that he will go to college, start working as a video analyst, study in America, and maybe after all this he can become the youngest European coach in the NBA».

On the possibility of him going from Europe to the NBA:For all European coaches it is a great opportunity. I’m confident and I’m not afraid. I made history with Besiktas, with Galatasaray, and he made history with Efes. I went to Panathinaikos when they were 17th and we had a historic season. If any NBA team calls me to be their coach, I will go there with all my confidence».
