Luigi Mangione, who is accused of killing UnitedHealth Group executive Brian Thompson in Manhattan, is facing eleven charges.

In particular, Mangione was charged with first degree murder, but also with murder in the context of a terrorist act.

The indictment alleges that Maggione killed Thompson with the intent to “influence the policy of a governmental unit by intimidation or coercion.”

“This type of premeditated, targeted gun violence cannot and will not be tolerated,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement announcing the indictment.

Maggione’s New York defense attorney, Karen Friedman Agnifilo, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Ivy League-educated Mangione was charged with murder on Dec. 9 in the slaying of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel before a company conference, following a five-day manhunt.

Maggione suffered from chronic back pain that affected his daily life, according to friends and social media posts, although it is unclear if his personal health played a role in the murder.

Maggione is currently being held on gun charges in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested last week. Prosecutor Bragg is seeking his extradition to New York.
