The completed 2024 was one of the best years in the history of Panathinaikos, as it brought them to the top Europe and Greece in an impressive way. Now, however, season is different and the “greens” aim to repeat last year’s feats.
In this context, it is interesting to make a comparison between this year’s course of his team Ergin Ataman in the Euroleague, compared to last year, in the corresponding period, that is until New year of 2024. It is clear that although the record of the “cloverleaf” is almost identical, the way he plays has been noticeably different.
Starting with the basics, by New Year 2024 they had been played 17 matchesone less than in this year’s period. In other words, last year the time was changed after the first round had been completed, with the Panathinaikos to be in fourth place with 10-7 record. Accordingly, this year’s change of season found the “greens” again in fourth place, just with a victory more in one match more (11-7 record).
The individual statistics, however, have changed a lot, which also testifies to the differentiation in the team’s performance and playing style. At the corresponding time last year, the “greens” were still looking for their chemistry in attack and struggled much more there than in defense. It is characteristic that until the end of last year’s first round, Panathinaikos was just the 10th attack in the entire EuroLeague, with 114.1 points per 100 possessions. This year, on the other hand, he is first with 121.1 points per 100 possessionshaving noticeably improved his offensive production, since he plays with confidence… European champion.
On the contrary it’s the defense stuff. Facing difficulties in attack and having the motivation to prove things, last year Panathinaikos closed the first round as the fourth defense of the Euroleague, with 110.6 points per 100 possessions liabilities. This year, the “relaxation” at the beginning of the competition season threw the “greens” into 7th place with performance 114.9 points per 100 possessionsalthough it is worth noting that they are on the rise after the last three games, after they had reached much lower.
The much increased self-confidence with which the “seven-star” competes in this year’s season, as well as the more “even” way his attack works, are also evident from the percentages. Last year at this time, Panathinaikos was seventh in a percentage of two points with 55.3% and ninth in three-pointers with 36.2%. On the contrary, this year the “greens” have risen to fourth place in two-pointers with 58.6%, while they have “launched” to second place in three-point shots, having a percentage of 38.5%! The situation remains problematic on shotswith Panathinaikos entering last year as 15th (75.5%) and this year as 16th (74%).
Finally, it is worth mentioning the part of reboundwhich is the most noticeable difference compared to last year. In the first part of the season that took him to the top of Europe, the “greens” were barely 14th with a 48.7% rebound rate they secured in relation to what they claimed. All Panathinaikos fans will remember the matches lost due to the team’s bad habit of giving away second chances. This year, however, the situation has changed drastically with the steep rise in his performance Juancho Hernangomet and the addition of good rebounders such as Omer Yurtseven and the Chedi Osman. For the sake of truth, o Panathinaikos is first in the corresponding percentage, as it ensures the 52.4% of rebounds who claims!
It becomes clear, therefore, that despite the short period of… grumbling that there was with some defeats, his team Ergin Ataman is performance-wise rather better than at the same time last season. Of course, something like this is also logical, since last year there was a team that was still being built and this year it entered the “ring” as European champion. The only thing that is certain is that Panathinaikos’ numbers are clearly those of a championship team, and it remains to be seen if he will be able to confirm them in the next, crucial part of the season.
