Maria Sakkari suffered her first defeat in the WTA Finals, losing to Paula Bandosa 7-6 (4), 6-4.
The Spaniard continued her formidable performances on the 2nd day of the tournament in Guadalajara and made the “2X2”, celebrating an important step for the qualification.
Sakkari will have another opportunity to advance to the tournament, in the match-final with Sampalenka on Monday (15/11) at 22:00.
The battles were exciting in the first set, with Bandoza taking shape after the fifth game and reaching comfortably from 2-2 to 5-2. Sakkari found her rhythm again and took the next three, to equalize at 5-5, while the two of them kept the serve and reached 6-6.
In the tie break, Bandoza was stormy and led 4-0, with Sakkari trying to “close” the difference, without success.
In the second set, the Spaniard took control early, and led 3-1, after tremendous pressure from Sakkari in the fourth game.
Bandoza put pressure on Sakkari’s serve, counting six break points in the fifth game, however the Greek endured and made it 3-2, while then reached the draw at 4-4 with a comfortable break.
Her opponent’s reaction, however, was immediate. With… acquired speed he made the break for 5-4 and stopped Sakkari’s attempt for a break, “clearing” the second set with 6-4.
