The Ukrainian battlefront already has at least two former tennis players who have passed through the world’s top courts in recent years: Sergei Stakhovski, 36, and Andrei Medvedev, 47.
Stakhovsky joined Ukrainian forces in early March. This Tuesday (17), he posted on his social networks the news that Medvedev has joined him.
The two join a series of civilians who have volunteered to help the country’s army in the war with Russia, which is now in its fourth week.
Stakhovski, 36, recently ended his career after this year’s Australian Open. In the 18 seasons he was in action, he even defeated Roger Federer on grass at Wimbledon, was 31st in the world and has four ATP titles in his career – all in the 250 category.
In an interview with AFP, he said that he did not tell his children exactly what he was doing on his “trip”.
“I’m not proud that I left the kids. My kids don’t know I’m here. Well, they know I’m not home, but they don’t know what war is and I’m trying not to get them involved. 15 days,” he said.
Medvedev, 47, had a more successful career on the court. There are 11 titles on the circuit, including four in the 1000 category (three of them in Hamburg and one in Monte Carlo).
In 1999, he was runner-up at Roland Garros, having defeated Brazilians Fernando Meligeni in the semifinals and Gustavo Kuerten, aka Guga, in the quarterfinals. Medvedev retired in 2001.
