São Paulo defeated Corinthians 2-1 in the semifinal of the Campeonato Paulista held at Morumbi this Sunday (27) and will face Palmeiras in the final of the tournament for the second year in a row.
In the 2021 Paulista final, the tricolor team, at the time led by Hernán Crespo, defeated the alviverde team and took the championship title. If they overcome their opponents again, the club will achieve something they haven’t been able to do since 1992: being a two-time state champion.
The decision will be the first for Rogério Ceni ahead of São Paulo, as coach. Ceni, during the period he played at the club, was a three-time champion in São Paulo, a three-time Brazilian champion and even won the Libertadores and the Club World Cup.
Wellington opened the scoring in the 41st minute. The left-back received a pass at the entrance to the Corinthians area and ended it with a strong kick.
The second goal of São Paulo was scored by midfielder Alisson, at 17 of the second half. There was a start of turmoil between players a few minutes later, when São Paulo striker Luciano was brought down by Du Queiroz – both received a yellow card.
Corinthians decreased in the 40th minute of the second half, in a goal scored by Jô after goalkeeper Jandrei failed. After the final whistle, Adson, from Corinthians, was expelled for complaint.
With this Sunday’s victory, São Paulo breaks a sequence of nine defeats to Corinthians in knockout stages. The last time the tricolor team eliminated Corinthians was in the 2000 state championship.
The match registered the largest audience of 2022 in São Paulo, with 53,900 paying – the classic against Palmeiras for the first phase of Paulista had 46,300 fans in Morumbi.
This is the third classic that Corinthians has lost since the arrival of Vítor Ferreira, hired at the end of February. The Portuguese coach was announced after the resignation of Sylvinho, motivated by a defeat to Santos. With the new commander, he fell against São Paulo on the 5th and by Palmeiras on the 17th, in addition to this Sunday’s setback.
The Paulista title will be played in two matches, home and away, which should take place on March 30 and April 3.
Abel Ferreira, who signed the contract renewal this Saturday (26), goes to his ninth final at the club. Of the eight decisions so far, Abel has won two Libertadores, a Copa do Brasil and a Recopa Sudamericana, but has not yet won the Paulista.
recent clashes
After losing the 2021 Paulista decision to São Paulo, in August, Palmeiras managed to eliminate São Paulo from Libertadores in the quarterfinals, with a 3-0 victory in the return game and broke the taboo — until so, he had never beaten his rival in the competition. In 1994, 2005 and 2006, São Paulo passed Palmeiras in knockout stages.
In November, in a match for the Brasileiro, Abel Ferreira selected an almost entirely reserve squad, with the justification of allowing the starting team to rest for the Libertadores final, which would be played a few days later – Palmeiras ended up being defeated 2-0 by Sao Paulo. The coach received criticism from the fans organized by the choice at the time, but weeks later he became champion of the continental cup.
