Strengthening the roster ahead of the new racing season continues at an undiminished pace of Panionios!
At noon on Thursday (26/06), Neosmyrnians announced the start of their cooperation with George Pope, With the Greek -American guard coming from a full and excellent season with the Peristeri jersey.
With the “blue-yellow” in the 2024-25 season, the 27-year-old guard had 10.4 points, 2.6 assists and 1.9 rebounds in the Greek league, while in the Basketball Champions League He scored 7.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists.
Thus, after the additions of Michalis Lundzi and Marcel Starks, Panionios adds another piece to the puzzle of his renewed peripheral line.

Greek -American athlete George Pope is the next move by OEM Panionios in terms of roster staffing with players who have the experience and quality to cope with the demanding year that follows.
George Papas (George Papathanasiou) was born on April 15, 1998 in New Jersey, USA. It is 1.96m high. And he graduated from Union Catholic high school and then from Monmouth (NCAA) where he had averaged 14.9 points in his last year- 5.4 rebounds- 3 assists- 1.4 steals with 35% in three points in 34 games (everyone was in the top five).
In 133 matches in NCAA he had an average of 8.7 points- 2.7 rebounds- 1.7 assists in about 20 minutes.
In the summer of 2022 he joined Olympiacos where he stayed until January 2024 (a total of 35 matches, 4 at EuroLeague) when he signed to Prometheus Patras. In 16 GBL matches with Prometheus he had 6.5 points- 1.6 rebounds.
During the 2024-2025 season he competed in Peristeri where he had 10.9 points- 2.6 rebounds- 2.4 assists in GBL in 27 matches while at BCL he scored 7.9 points- 1.8 rebounds- 1.8 assists.
He also counts 2 entries with the national team where he even used the name “Papathanasiou” in the jersey.
With Olympiacos he won the Greek Championship in 2023, the Greek Cup in 2023 as well as the Super Cup in 2022 and 2023.
