The assurance that the Municipality of Athens will be a powerful ally in the attempt of the Hellenic Deaf Federation to claim the organization of the Deaf Olympic Games in 2029 was given by the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, as part of the meeting today at the Friday.
Mr Doukas signed a letter of support with the EAAK for the claim of the Deaf Olympic Games in 2029.
The President of EOAK and EDSO, Joseph Stavrakakis, who is a member of the ICSD Board of Directors (EDSO’s legal representative) and a consultant to the Deaflympics Organizing Committee, thanked the Mayor for his support. He also congratulated him on his initiative on accessibility to interpretation.
He then informed him of the steps followed by the Federation to submit the candidacy file of our country.
As he pointed out, the Deaf Olympics are a leading international sporting event, independent of the Paralympic Games, which includes 23 sports. The next event will take place in August 2029, and the decision to be assigned will be taken at the annual Conference of the World Federation on November 25, 2025.
The speech then took place by the Secretary General of the EOAK, Takis Kordonouris. He thanked Mr Doukas for his support for claiming the candidacy and invited him to be present at the decision to assign the games next November to Tokyo.
The Mayor of Athens said in his brief speech after signing: “With great pleasure, I support the submission of the Greek Deaf Federation of Sports Federation to the World Deaf Sports Federation for the organization and hospitality of the 26th summer Olympics. We are here to send a message not just support, but also a message that Athens and EOAK can and should organize such great events. I hope we are in Tokyo in a few months and listen to the positive news. ”
The meeting was attended by the Federation of Federation, Vassiliki Dimopoulou, while the Municipality’s technical track and field consultant was the president of OPANDA, Eleni Zontiou, and the Executive Advisor for Accessibility, Elena.
