Trump signed an executive decree to limit payments to students-athletes

by

The US President, Donald Trumpsigned the fifth executive decree that enhances federal supervision in payments received by students-athletes, mainly in high-commercial sports such as American football and basketball.

The decree aims to limit payments by third parties – such as donors – to students -athletes, in an attempt to protect the resources available for women and non -commercial sports. Although this practice is already prohibited by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), several donors have found ways to bypass the regulations to attract top talents.

According to the White House, the decree does not aim for the legal gain of athletes through commercial exploitation agreements (NIL) – such as sponsorships or the use of name and image.

At the same time, the Executive Decree calls on universities to increase scholarships for sports without revenue and ordered the competent federal departments to begin “clarification” of the legal status of students.

Trump’s initiative may bring about changes in the budgets of the schools and the costly area of college sport, possibly affecting the fees and labor rights of students-athletes. How exactly the measure will be implemented, however, remains unclear.

It is reported that the federal authorities will develop a plan of implementation, utilizing “all available and appropriate regulatory, audit and legal tools”.
