His legend NBA and former (just a few hours ago) coach of the Blazers is involved in a mafia-linked ring that organized illegal poker games and also bet on league games using “insider” information. His lawyer, Chris Haywood, says with certainty that his client is innocent and will prove himself at trial.
“Anyone who knows Chauncey Billups knows he is a man of integrity. And people of integrity do not deceive others. If you believe he did what the authorities charge him with, you believe he would risk his Hall of Fame legacy, his reputation, and his freedom. He would never risk all that for anything, let alone a game of cards. Additionally, Billups has never and will never bet on basketball games, provide inside information, or sacrifice the trust of his team and the NBA by tarnishing a game he has dedicated his entire life to. Chauncey Billups has never given up and he’s not going to now. He will fight these charges with the same intensity that distinguished him in his 28-year basketball career. We look forward to the trial”he said.
