THE Max Dowman made history at Emirates as he became the youngest starting player in Arsenal’s historystarting in the Carabao Cup match against Brighton at the age of just 15 years and 302 days. The young winger, who had already made his Premier League debut against Leeds in August, impressed with his maturity and technique, completing five of the nine dribbles he attempted and winning nine duels – more than any other player on the pitch.
Mikel Arteta revealed how Dowman responded with one small smile when he learned he would start, showing composure and naturalness. “For him everything is normal. He plays football with courage and determination“, said Arteta, adding that the youngster feels ready to compete even in the Champions League. If he can do it before his birthday on New Year’s Eve, he will become the youngest player in the competition’s history.
However, Arteta stresses the need for protection and gradual development. Dowman is still a student and is preparing for GCSE exams, which makes the balance between sport and education crucial. “We need to properly manage its evolution. There are many new things in his life. Let us encourage him, but let us also protect him“, he characteristically said.
In the same match he made his debut as a starter and 17-year-old Andre Harriman-Anouswho contributed to Arsenal’s second goal with a fine partnership with Jurien Timber, before Bukayo Saka scored. Arteta said he was impressed by the mentality of the young striker: “From the preparation it was clear how much he wants it. He is consistent and constantly gives us reasons to choose him.”
After the match ended, the two young men walked around the field in each other’s arms, enjoying the moment. OR Hale End Academy had a strong presence in the match: Ethan Nwaneri and Miles Lewis-Skelly combined for the opening goal, while former academy player Eberetsi Eze also started.
Arsenal are clearly investing in the future, with a new generation of players combining talent, maturity and ambition. Max Dowman is the most shining example of this philosophy – a child who plays with his heart, but needs guidance and support to develop properly.
