The veterans participated in the Panhellenic Table Tennis Championship at SEF, while the independents in the respective Championship at the same stadium. Everyone enjoyed playing in the two separate individual events, organized for the first time by the Hellenic Table Tennis Federation.
18 men participated in the Panhellenic Veterans Championship, 11 men in the Open Open and for a few hours they found a wonderful opportunity to escape from the stress of everyday life. Participation may have been limited, but the Federation, with its excellent organization and interest, took care to create a completely friendly atmosphere and the racing passion to be combined with fun.
With referees, with a secretariat that passed online results, with small symbolic gifts and a surprise, with the president of the Board of Directors of the Federation, Costas Papageorgiou, present and with many photos and videos of all the matches for the channel of E.F.O .Επ.Α. on youtube. The event featured winners in a total of four age categories.
With the exception of the single group in the category up to 49 years of independence, in the other categories there were groups in the first phase and “knockout” matches in the second with a “small” final. The race program started at 11:00.
The first Panhellenic Veterans Championship was attended by 18 former or current athletes, who today are over 40 years old, while they came from 15 clubs.
In the 40-49 year old category, Nikos Hartofylakas won. In the final, he defeated Panagiotis Pierrakeas 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 12-10).
In the 50+ age category, the gold medal was won by the national federal coach, Costas Vatsaklis. In the final, he defeated Gerasimos Moschonas with a 3-1 set (11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 11-5). At the age of 81, the arrogant old international athlete Stavros Plakantonakis also competed and took the fourth place.
In the open championship of independents, where athletes had the right to participate, who never had a ticket in a club of E.F.O.E.P.A. 11 men took part.
Elias Katsivelis took the first place in the 50+ age category. In the final, it prevailed with a 3-1 set by Loukas Gialouris (7-11, 11-4, 11-7, 14-12). The latter had his birthday on Sunday and experienced a mini surprise from the organizers. They took him an individual cake, put a candle on it and sang “to live”.
Bottles of water, juices and cereal bars were distributed to all participants.
A single group was formed in the category of athletes up to 49 years old. Charalambos Dalietos was declared the winner and secured the first place in the last match, when he defeated Pavlos Stefanopoulos with 3-1 sets (11-7, 12-10, 5-11, 11-7). A bronze medal was awarded to this category.
