EOE: “Fencing should not ‘escape’ from the closed OAKA”

by

The Greek Olympic Committee demands that sports not be “released” from the OAKA training facilities after the transfer of the indoor stadium to Panathinaikos.

As it is emphasized in an announcement, EOE agrees with the concession of the facilities, but asks not to lose the training spaces, especially for fencing.

In detail, the announcement:

“The Hellenic Olympic Committee was informed by reports that the Government has decided to cede the indoor basketball court of OAKA to KAE Panathinaikos for 49 years.

EOE’s firm position is that it agrees with the operation of the sports facilities in order to be better maintained and to remain functional, as long as amateur sports are not affected.

In this context, it agrees with the concession of the OAKA indoor court, without losing the training and competition areas for the other sports, especially for fencing, which has brought many distinctions in our country at a global level.

We therefore ask that the fencing coaches be excluded from the agreement for OAKA and remain in the sport. If this is not possible, then the sport should leave OAKA, only when another place is found that is completely ready to operate and welcome the athletes. The same of course applies to the National Basketball Teams of all categories.

In any case, the Hellenic Olympic Committee can not consent to the “emergence” of amateur sports from their training facilities without “there are alternative solutions.”
