It was not this year that the title of ‘action sportsman of the year’ ended up in the hands of surf representatives. That’s because the Laureus Award announced the winners and both surfers who competed, the Brazilian Italo Ferreira and the Hawaiian Carissa Moore, ended up empty-handed.
On the other hand, the title went to Bethany Shriever, from Great Britain. The athlete became ‘Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year’ after winning, in the same year, the gold medals in the Olympic Games and in the BMX World Championship.
An interesting curiosity about Shriever, is that before the Olympics she needed to raise money through crowdfunding to fund her own qualification campaign, after the UK Sport agency cut her support.

THE Laureus World Comeback of the Year winner was skater Sky Brown, who suffered a fractured skull when he fell headfirst off a half-pipe during a training session in June 2020.
The Japanese-British skater arrived at the hospital unconscious, but recovered and even competed in the Olympics. At the age of 13 years and 28 days, she finished third in the women’s park skate final and won the bronze medal, becoming Britain’s youngest Olympic medalist.
