Pacaembu grandstand is partially demolished

The stands of the Pacaembu stadium, which is in the central region of São Paulo, are being partially demolished. The site is listed in the state and municipal preservation agencies.

According to the Allegra concessionaire, the current manager of the architectural complex inaugurated in the 1940s, the works are aimed at expanding the bathrooms and creating cabins, a space for events and a food court, in addition to providing more accessibility to the public with disabilities or Reduced mobility.

The plan was presented to the city hall, to Conpresp and to Condephaat (the councils responsible for preservation in the municipality and state, respectively).

“The side stands will be rebuilt with the same geometry as the original ones, according to a project approved by the historical heritage preservation agencies and the municipal secretariats”, says a note from Allegra. There will be changes in the structural part of the set and in the foundations.

Paulo Coutinho, the engineer responsible for the works, said that there is a concern to preserve the stadium’s identity. The “renovation, restoration and modernization” works began in June 2021 and include a nine-story building where the grandstand known as the toboggan used to be, which was entirely demolished.

The building project released by Allegra also includes a hotel, an events and convention center for up to 9,000 people and an underground car park.

There will also be the creation of a sports medicine center and restaurants. The concessionaire plans to invest more than R$ 400 million, promising “a more open, democratic, inclusive and plural Pacaembu.”

According to the São Paulo City Government Secretariat, the project presented by the concessionaire was duly approved by Conpresp and is under analysis by Condephaat. “New circulation passages are also planned in the stands, to improve the use of space and flow control, especially on days when the stadium is operating”.
